Here are some printing terms which you may need to know in order to understand the components and specs of your project:
- An "insert" is the paper that is inserted into a CD or DVD case
- A "Tray Card" is the paper the goes into the back of the CD case
- Full color printing involves the mixure of 4 colors (cyan, magenta, yellow & black or CMYK)
- Full color printing on a panel or insert is refered to as 4 (for 4 colors)
- One color printing may be done in any of the 4 CMYK colors, but is typically in black
- One color printing on a panel or insert is referred to as 1 (for 1 color)
- A full color front and 1 color page two would be represented like this: 4/1 (4 colors over one color)
- A full color front and page two would be represented like this: 4/4 (4 colors over 4 colors)
- Thermal imprinting is a process where a colored wax is burned onto the surface of the disc
- Ink jet printing is where a special disc with a porous surface is imprinted via ink jet means
- Silk screening is the process of printing discs via silkscreen in up to 5 colors
- Offset printing is the standard "printing press" type process.
- Replication=stamping the disc in a mold. Typically 1000 or more units.
- Duplication=burning the disc. Typically less than 1000 units.
- Authoring is the process of creating and/or arranging data/menus/navigation for a DVD
- "Bleed" refers to the area outside the cut line.
